Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This fairly recent arrival at the foot of Broughton Street has no need of background music as it already resonates with lively chatter and the click of busy waiters' heels on terracotta. It's easy to see why: Rosario and Ciro Sartore's uncomplicated southern Italian cooking makes the most of Scotland's seafood (think thick ribbons of bavette pasta topped with succulent lobster, or mussels enveloped in a creamy chickpea and rocket broth) and includes generous cuts of meat and chunky Italian sausages cooked on the charcoal grill. On the ground floor the main restaurant has a comfortable retro feel, with faux whitewashed brickwork and solid dark wood furniture, while downstairs the wine bar (which has its own menu of nibbles and light dishes) is more rustic and funky, with exposed stonewalls and curvaceous, brightly-coloured low-slung sofas and chairs. The classy, mostly Italian wine list (available both upstairs and down) includes some interesting bottles from Campania and has an impressively extensive selection available by the glass. On busy nights diners are encouraged to move downstairs for dessert or coffee rather than lingering in the main restaurant, but with such stylish surroundings it's really no great hardship.
