Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

A first date joint this is not, but there’s something refreshingly simplistic about Wannaburger. Forget table service: a recent revamp means customers order at the counter, then pick up when a buzzer says it’s ready. Forget plates too, with various recycling bins dotted around to accommodate the all-new, eco-friendly bio packaging when you’re done. Their food though, remains the same: tasty and a fraction of the price of the competitors, whether it’s the char-grilled Cajun chickenburger (served in half or whole breast) or the moist, oozing home-made spicy burger with fried onion, mayo and lettuce. A basic, classic hamburger is a snip at £2.95, while even the more adventurous halloumi burger, complete with tapenade, grilled peppers, rocket and mayo, still arrives under the £6 mark. The 'giant pickle' priced at a bargainous 30p, as a side really is giant, if a little sickly sweet, while other sides of coleslaw, Cajun fries (delicious) and onion rings provide great tastes at great prices. A dessert of American short stack pancakes is a little forgettable but the pints of Scottish-brewed tipples on tap, such as BrewDog’s 77 Lager and Bitter & Twisted, round off proceedings nicely.

  • High point: Great value burgers
  • Low point: Confusing recycling bins

Have to disagree with the most recent poster. The thing that set Wannaburger apart for me was the little touches like cutlery and plates.

We really enjoyed our first visit, but since then a repeat visit for burgers was a pale imitation of our first time here.

Recently I had breakfast and to say this was a let down would be an understatement.

Dry bacon, average scrambled eggs and OK toast, but the worst thing was the portion size which seems to have shrunk alarmingly. I wasn't aware I'd asked for a child's portion.

Given the vast competition for eating out in Edinburgh I'm always amazed when places that started out well change for the worse and don't appear to realise or seem too bothered about it.

I'm afraid Wannaburger have lost one more customer for good.

It's a shame, as this place has so much potential.

I have been to Wannaburger before and after it's revamp and I actually prefer it to before.
This is how burgers should be, you don't need knives, forks or plates to enjoy one.
The food and drinks are fantastic and inexpensive.
It is now a fast food joint, but a good one. Good quality and tasty ingredients that actually fill you up!
For burgers I come here, I don't want cheap nasty crap from McDs or other chains, but equally I don't want to spend a fortune and be looked at funny for using my hands to eat a burger.

Like my fellow reviewer I was disappointed by Wannaburger's makeover. We visited in November 2010, promising my Dad a proper burger in a retro setting. What we found was a damp squib in comparison: thin, pale looking burgers, a bare scraping of cheese and a sorry looking piece of limp lettuce. Not to mention decor that wouldn't look out of place in other well known high street 'resturants'. My Dad, bless him, still tucked into his burger but I felt cheated by the experience. The only good bit was the chocolate milkshake but I'd rather have it from an old fashioned diner glass anyday.

BEWARE! Wannaburger has revamped more than its decor, and ruined its raison d'etre - burgers. Gone are the luscious burgers; now only 1cm thick. Though you can have a double burger ... sound familiar? It's not the only way they've tried to copy McDonalds or Burger King. Everything is now served in paper or cardboard, regardless of whether you sit in or out. It's counter service, not table service. They are trying to make a virtue of the fact it's now cheaper and faster, but if that was what you were after you may as well go round the corner to McDonalds who remain cheaper and faster still.

RIP true Wannaburger.

I grudgingly still have to give it a star for its milkshakes, but drinking from a McDonald's-style paper cup - not even their old clear takeaway cups - just isn't the same.
