This smart little bistro lies on the busy Dumbarton road just a few door along from the library, unsurprisingly at number 279. During the day the Italian-influenced menu offers sandwiches, ciabattas, homemade pizzas, or a generously portioned steak and red onion panini or the decidedly non-Italian piri piri chicken with red peppers. Its simple, affordable menu also includes bruschetta, paté and soup alongside more substantial pasta plates of penne salmon or a comforting Bolognese. When darkness falls, the candles are lit and the cosy space becomes even more intimate. The evening menu raises the game, becoming more imaginative, straying from the Italian theme. Mains might include pork medallions on apple mash, or grilled halloumi. It’s wifi access makes it a useful spot, and it’s comfortable interior has a bit of class in an area of town otherwise devoted to all day breakfasts and pub grub.

  • High point: Comfortable café with affordable food
  • Low point: On a busy main road
