Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

When Hakki Ciloglo came to Scotland on holiday in the 1970s he spotted a gap in the market and returned in 1982 to open what he claims was the country's first kebab shop. What is certain is that he does have much to boast about. Offering more than just your standard doner, all kebabs here are made in-house daily, and Hakki puts his popularity down to his unique salad dressing and chilli sauce, made from a secret family recipe. Every bite of the kofte kebab (flame-grilled flavoured minced lamb) is densely packed with spicy goodness, with the generous portions of mixed salad providing occasional relief, and you'll need an achingly empty stomach to cross the finish line. The chicken is even better: juicy, chunky and incredibly moreish; or you can go for the Topkapi special, which contains four different meats for £10.

BEST CHICKEN KEBABS AROUND!

Jimmy125 obviously went at like 2am when everyone is queueing after clubbing expecting a quick drunk kebab! If he had went at a normal time he'd only have to wait 5 minutes for the best chicken kebab ever! It may be getting a little dear but its totally worth it when you taste it.

THREATENING & UNBELIEVABLE! I ordered a large chicken kebab here, and after it took over 30 minutes to prepare and I walked out, I was chased down the road by the coutner staff IN HIS CAR and threatened that he would 'KICK MY HEAD IN' for expecting reasonable customer service. Avoid at all costs if you value your own self respect.

That last statement is a total disgrace. I have been visiting the Topkapi since '94 and the food and service have been exemplary at all times. I recommend the food here to anyone who enjoys a real turkish kebab. I can only think the previous review would prefer a greasy, fatty, morning killer kebab.
Great food. great take away, great service. THE true original.
