SmoothBoy's Deli is a noble enterprise. In an area where the most famous dining experience is the £2-for-three-courses special in a nearby pub, owners Ewan and Anne-Marie Henderson are selling fine foods out of their tiny premises. They avoid the bulk goods wheeled in by larger delis, instead championing lesser known Scottish produce such as Galloway Lodge jams, Black Jack snacks and Henshell Woods chutney and pickles, most of which ends up in gift hampers. The builders, office workers and Tramway theatre staff that queue out the door often want straightforward fare (baked potatoes, tuna mayo sarnies or caramel shortcake), but the menu does veer away from Scottish sandwich shop staples. For example, the antipasto panini bulges with black olives, salami, pastrami and sun-blushed tomatoes. A 'healthy living' award from the Scottish Consumer Council, one of the first earned by a Glaswegian deli, rewards efforts to steer clear of grease and fat.
