Inspired by the tiny coffee shops of San Francisco’s Mission District, the Fair Trade Coffee Shop’s owner Joe Jerome has created his own small slice of urban bohemia on Leith Walk. He’s gone one further, in fact –- the top secret brand of single source Guatemalan Java which gives this café its name has been procured, after much hunting, from the same suppliers who sell to his favourite San Franciscan coffee house. If you can get a seat in the small, gig poster-covered dining room through the back (not so easy at peak times), a cup of the black stuff or an Equal Exchange tea is best enjoyed with a bit of time to enjoy the free internet and WiFi. The food, meanwhile, is old-school but well-prepared. Various paninis, bagels and filled breakfast rolls are all present and correct, and the reassuringly non-greasy cooked Scottish breakfast (£3.95 or £4.25 with tomato and mushrooms on the side) looks positively respectable on a nifty triangular plate. Meanwhile, a pair of pancakes doused in maple syrup, while not necessarily ‘Edinburgh’s best’, certainly have to be the city’s most filling; big pillowy things which look more like scones on the plate.
- High point: An old-fashioned greasy spoon with a youthful buzz about it
- Low point: Comfy seats are limited

This place is definitely worth a visit, or several! I live not too far off from it and always forget to go. It had been ages so I popped in the other day for breakfast and it now has an even better selection- including pancakes which I am very excited about as they are harder to find than you'd think!
The friendly and humorous staff really make you feel at home and obviously make the effort when preparing food and coffee (really tasty coffee, in 3 different sizes and no burning of the milk which is my pet hate!) Portion sizes are generous and the place is really good value- you get your money's worth and don't feel ripped off at all, unlike a 4 quid pannini in Costa or Starbucks with stale bread and no filling!!!
If you haven't been- go!

While looking in an art mag/cafe culture freebie I came across this quirky little cafe. Im mad on coffee, and fair-trade so this is the perfect combo for me. Went today, absolutely loved it, chilled out, studenty, and a very good soundtrack. Food was delicious, portions were perfect, adequite for most people. Sandwiches were full of delicious fresh ingredients, and the pancakes are literally to DIE for!
Friendly and attentive service, after one visit, I feel like a regular. Ill be back next week definately! Highly recommended for anyone who doesn't mind the small space!

Just discovered this place a couple of weeks ago and have already been back. It's a lovely wee place - good quality at very reasonable prices and fantastic for breakfast.
