The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
The creation of the Herald Café Bar formed part of the re-development of the Mitchell Library in 2007. Planned as a meeting hub for students, local business people and visitors to library events, the design makes use of the glass frontage to create a modern, light and airy space. Adjoining the café bar is a multimedia centre containing a bank of 50 computers. Counter service means that on busy events days, customers’ patience can be stretched. As well as cakes, coffees and teas for those stopping for a chat, there is a bar and a range of hot and cold dishes. Baked potatoes range in price from £2.50 to £3.75 and there is a soup of the day – reported to be very good – as well as Scotch broth always available. In addition, there is a choice of half a dozen panini and sandwiches served on a range of breads, as well as larger dishes, which include chicken Madras, goats cheese omelette and potato and chorizo salad.
- High point: Bright and breezy, good dishes
- Low point: Allow time at event rush-hours
