Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Angels may be the most popular restaurant in Lanarkshire, judging by the amazing speed with which tables fill up - even early week. It's a venture which aims to take what was once straightforward pub food to a more ambitious level. In a smart, contemporary bar setting adapted to restaurant use, diners are offered a recital of eternal pub classics, such as haddock and chips and steak pie, but the kitchen ups the ante with options that include chicken fajitas - the toasted but tender pieces set off splendidly by fresh tortillas, peppers and dips. A main of roast chicken and bacon is served with a huge pile of carrots, runner beans and roast potatoes, set off with a gravy that is rich but doesn't mask any of the natural flavours. Celtic FC legend Harry Hood (who launched the original enterprise, though it's now run by his family) is sometimes to be seen bringing the odd plate to a table and having a chat with customers. The house policy is generally 'big portions' - better a little too much than not enough, they reckon - but, if you want to enjoy them, booking really is essential, at practically any time.

  • High point: Sterling service no matter how busy
  • Low point: Portions leave no room for dessert

Myself and 6 friends booked a table. We had to wait 50 mins for it. Our drinks eventually arrived after sitting on the bar being ignored by staff. Our food was served and indeed was very nice, but had to ask for our table to be cleared, then had to ask for table to be cleaned. When we complained were told "ITS BEEN LIKE THIS ALL DAY" from a very dour faced waitress. We had another long wait for our coffees and drinks only to be told we had 10mins to drink them as the table was booked for 6.30,and to crown it all when we got the bill we were charged £4.20 for a jug of soda water (thats just greed). Over all a very unfriendly place.

had a fantastic meal here recently. Plus just been refurbished again. They have a new menu which allows you to choose 1, 2 or 3 courses for up to £10.95 amazing value and no pub grub type food though that can be found on their everyday menu which is very extensive but not expensive. The wine we choose was so delicious and good value, we will definately be back again. Angels is a good choice for qaulity without paying city centre prices, the heritage of the establishment only adds kudos to the whole experience. A great place for the whole family to enjoy a great meal experience without breaking the bank.

I have visited Angels numerous times and have always had a great experience. I have friends from the area who happen to know the staff and their always cheery and welcoming, both inside the establishment and out. I cannot believe someone actually described Angels as a 'dank pit' an utterley preposterous remark. As i have already stated I have friends who live near the restaurant and spend loads of my time around the area, and can honestly say i have never laid eyes on one of these alleged regular 'riots' its amazing how one possibly bad experience can snowball.

I am appalled by the knocking copy displayed in the above two reviews. My experience of Angels is entirely positive. Tasty, high quality, home-style food presented by cheerful, friendly (though never obsequious) staff. The Monday to Thursday "two-for-one" special on main courses offers tremendous value for money. The atmosphere is family-oriented with a ready welcome for small children adding to the generally cheerful ambience. A real favourite.

angels hotel has really went down hill over the past few months! the quality of meals and service is very disapointing! wine glasses are not cleaned properly as they always seem to be covered in a distasteful and cheap, dark red lipstick! i often drive by at weekends, coming home from volunteer work, to find a fleet of police cars outside the "dank pit" no doubt there to break up the riots which are becoming more and more frequent. if you are looking for a refreshing drink and a lovely meal why not try the anvil. just a five minute walk from angels hotel. it boasts 1 of the most extensive and competitve menu's around, and an atmosphere which is second to none!

Despite the reputation, do not bother going. Their service is very poor and with one or two exceptions the staff treat you like dirt (the owner does on occasion too!). Expensive also!!!
