Villages like Pitscottie in Fife aren't typical settings for gastronomic ventures on the scale of Harvey McGuire's delicatessen and eatery. The former Pitscottie Inn combines a promising food shop, stocked with organic and local produce, with a bustling bistro that takes a fresh approach to country cuisine. Contemporary pictures hang on the aubergine-coloured walls, with bare wooden floors and minimalist table settings further endorsing their modern approach. The menu continues the country chic theme, offering choices such as juicy king prawns with zesty vegetable chop suey and tender lemon chicken with basil oil. The extensive specials board, which is changed every Friday, adds as many choices again. Youthful and amiable waiters deliver main courses such as a monstrous beer-battered East Neuk haddock and chips and a steak pie, the latter tasty, but perhaps lacking a luxurious gravy. The dessert selection maintains the affable standard, with a rich chocolate brûlée or seasonal fruit crumble rounding off an enjoyable dining experience. The busy diary of tasting evenings and local events will make it a hit with natives, but, with an art gallery and daily seasonal specials to boot, it should also tempt visitors from further afield.
