The light and airy café/deli on North West Circus Place in Stockbridge is the most recent venture for Herbie of Edinburgh, and an inviting, family-friendly, foodie dreamscene. On offer is an astounding assortment of fine wines and 'slow' foods, such as pedigree pig dry-cured ham, Brie de Meaux, and pepper artisan chocolate made by the Chocolate Tree. Co-owners Andrew Firth and Tannis Dodd exclude fashionable foodstuffs with expensive packaging, selling instead only the most honest and best quality produce. Herbie has become famous for bread, made specially by baker James Morrison, and for fresh deli goodies served by obliging staff. With a smaller deli-only outlet on Raeburn Place in Stockbridge, a foodie bookshop across the road from this (coming spring 2008), and a takeaway in the West End, Herbie is a wonderful source of treats for the ultimate picnic or hamper. Alternatively, enjoy an aromatic coffee and a light breakfast in the café. For lunch, try the rare roast beef and harissa roll accompanied by a beetroot and orange smoothie and a date flapjack. Or sample the luxuriously smooth and potentially addictive chicken liver pâté with fresh granary bread, before filling your basket with delights to take home.
