Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

This restaurant's Hong Kong husband and Malaysian wife team chose to name it after Kublai Khan’s summer palace, over a hundred miles north of Beijing. Edinburgh’s Xanadu is not quite inner Mongolia, but it is a bus ride from the city centre and the couple are keen to tempt more than locals to their attractive but not palatial Cantonese-style restaurant with calligraphy on blue walls. Seafood is one of the main specialities with interesting combinations such as sweet and sour fish with pears and pine nuts. The chunky salt and pepper squid tangles need the accompanying chilli and spring onions as a foil to their thick coat of batter, and there are discernible discs of finely sliced fresh ginger and shards of green onion to contrast with the creamy rounds of fresh scallop. Flat rice noodles stir fried with beef have plenty of flavour, while Kung Po chicken is not short of peanuts in a rich almost cloying sweet and sour sauce. Portions are generous and there are plenty of fresh ingredients, so worth the trip beyond the city walls.

  • High point: Good range of flavours and textures
  • Low point: Just out of city centre range

Yes the location isn't great - but the food is a force to be reckoned with! You won't get a better crispy duck anywhere else in Edinburgh. They don't use MSG in their food, and it's not all gloopy like some places. The service is superb, attentive yet non-intrusive. I would highly recommend this restaurant!

Think reviewer must have been struggling to think of a low point when could only come up with ''out of the way location'' . This restaurant is on the main road , just before Meadowbank Stadium approx ten minutes from the centre of town with good choice of buses. Food , service etc well worth a visit and I really can't think of a low point .
