Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is taken from the 2007 edition.

Owned and run by well-known foodie folk in Stirlingshire, the Lewis family - who also own the Monachyle Mhor in Balquhidder - Ben Ledi Café will make sure you're well fed and watered on your visit to scenic Callander. Welcomed by grand Ben Ledi as you enter into the surprisingly busy little town, you'll find this little fish shop on the right as you enter from the south. It serves arguably the best fish and chips in the region, the former being fresh off the boats from Scotland's north east and straight over to Callander and onto your plate. Fish is fried with the lightest possible batter, and head chef Dick Lewis will make sure it's spot on - however you like it. It's not only fish that's a speciality here - straight from the Lewis farm, home-grown pigs, cattle, chickens and sheep guarantee your meat is fresh and local. Big things are planned for this little chippie, with a wet fish counter moving in, so you can pick and choose the kind that you'd like for lunch, or take it away for home grilling. There are also plans for teaching the tricks of the trade to lucky learners with demonstrations in preparing fresh fish yourself. The ‘Mhor Food' rebranding of all the Lewis' enterprises, which now includes Mhor Bread, the old Scotch Oven bakery in Callander, was announced in the spring of 2007.
