Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

The name Dirty Dick's conjures up images of buxom wenches serving flagons of foaming ale. In reality, this tourist-friendly watering hole is closer in ambience to a Scottish theme bar than a Carry On film. From wall to ceiling, the interior is decked out in all manner of tartan memorabilia, while the pub menu offers an interesting and enticing take on the no-frills Scottish food experience. All the classics are in place, but with a Caledonian twist, and there's certainly no shortage of haggis, from the filling mac haggis burger and the award-winning Scotch whisky haggis to vegetarian haggis and its whisky version. For the more pedestrian palate there's also the Loch Ness smoked salmon salad as well as a selection of baked potatoes (served with or without haggis). Indeed, all the ingredients of the traditional Scottish experience are here, including a warm welcome and attentive service.

  • High point: Great service
  • Low point: Everything served with coleslaw …including the bill
