This restaurant has ceased trading.
Taking over the premises formerly occupied by the much-loved Bronx diner, Kebabish Original pitches its fare more towards the early-eating crowd. With its location right next to the Playhouse and close to the city centre, it does a roaring passing trade - although this works against it in a way, given the somewhat cramped nature of the dining area. Sleekly styled in diner-fashion, the centrepiece of Kebabish is its open-plan kitchen, where customers can see and smell the establishment's 'thrill of the grill' motto in effect. The food is everything you'd expect from a good Indian restaurant - the menu contains a selection of korma, madras and biryani dishes - but the Kebabish speciality and char-grill menus are most recommended. Capable marinating and seasoning are the keys here, adding spice to the tender lahori fish massala and the delicate, creamy malai chicken, whose flavours belie the firm grilling they've taken. Traditional Indian dishes such as saag aloo and mutter paneer add variety alongside a pricier whole sea bass, and log-fired pizzas and kebabs cater to takeaway customers who still mourn the passing of the Bronx. A new restaurant that already fulfils many of its lofty ambitions despite its size limitations, Kebabish is surely on to a winner.
