It could be the location in the heart of the West End or the heart and soul that goes into the food produced in Fiona Buchanan's bustling deli-café that gave rise to the name for this gastronomic emporium. The interior has a rustic authenticity, with shelves crammed full of goodies and well chosen wines. The stuffed head of a gargantuan Highland cow watches over the Byres Road crowd who line up at the counter for sandwiches, salads and sugar-glazed confections to takeaway or enjoy at the new mezzanine bar. With only 12 seats, there can be a bit of a squeeze at busy times, but this encourages a friendly buzz between customers as they tuck into bowls of home-made soup and daily specials made lovingly by the chefs using the best local, seasonal produce. A hot cheese, ham and tomato sandwich is a more imaginative version of the over-used panini and comes on a wooden board with salad and crisps. The Bei & Nannini coffee is served in satisfyingly-sized mugs and tastes delicious with a giant praline meringue. Expanding the empire next door is Baker & Kitchen, which offers private dining from an eclectic menu, and a shop specialising in patisserie and sauces.
