Cloisters has what you would expect in a traditional pub: wooden pews, a blazing fire, real ales, an impressive selection of malt whiskies and a varied and reasonable wine list. The customers range from seasoned regulars to local students who have had the good fortune to stumble upon this find. Lunch is the only meal on offer with a menu that gives considerable choice and changes on a daily basis. Starters include deep fried brie with an apple and onion chutney, a choice of soup or a tasty garlic ciabatta. There are numerous pub staple options such as breaded scampi, fish and chips, sausage and mash and steak and mushroom pie. Vegetarians are offered a selection of sandwiches and baked potatoes, and the macaroni cheese is particularly good. Everything is well presented, the portions are just right and the food is hearty. The service is attentive and the mix of diners/drinkers creates a cosy atmosphere. Try and make it early for evening drinks to avoid fighting for a seat.
