Gibson Street is fast becoming the nucleus for West End dining, and Louis' Bistro has been growing in popularity since it opened in 2006. It's owned by the same team that runs the ever-wonderful No Sixteen [see Scottish], but the dishes here are more suited to casual dining. Steaks and burgers take pride of place on the menu. They're excellent, cooked to your requirements using some of the best quality ingredients. A hearty burger can come with a pepper sauce that gives the beef a gentle but distinct heat. There are plenty of alternatives for vegetarians. A starter of beetroot, pear and gorgonzola salad is creative, fresh and wholesome. Smoked haddock with creamy mash topped by a poached egg from the daily specials menu offers a filling main course with delicate flavours. The desserts are of the calibre of its sister operation: a Seville orange and carrot cheesecake is smooth and rich, its taste lingering in the mind long after the meal has finished.
