The restaurant formerly known as Saint Jude's experienced a Gallic revolution in 2006. Where once there was minimalist cool, a fin de siècle air has been created by opalescent globes and some elegant brass fittings (though the over-abundance of art nouveau posters risks appearing to be an unintentional parody). The soundtrack of Piaf, Trenet and Gainsbourg - while better than most restaurants' muzak - can come across as trying to out-French the French. The menu offers a wide range of classic brasserie staples, from snacks, such as croque monsieur, to traditional dishes such as coq au vin or moules marinières. A main course confit de canard is tender and richly flavoured, even if the duck's skin is rather oily instead of being crisped. Whatever shortcomings purists will find, an all-day prix fixe menu (two courses for £7.50) is certainly going to draw a crowd. And as this guide was going to press, a second outlet was opening in Byres Road, just up from Partick Cross.
