Back in the great American goldrush of 1849, Jagir Singh (AKA Masala Jak), introduced the delights of Indian cuisine to the USA, and a legend was born. Now the Harlequin group has decided to mark his achievement by opening a fresh, fun new curry house in Govan, named in Jak's honour and resembling a slightly tacky American diner crossed with a typical British Indian restaurant. The menu mimics this hybrid, basically comprising standard Indian dishes given some stateside twists. Starters range from pakora and samosas to tasty massala potato wedges and hot and sour wings - all of which come on a platter for two amid a jungle of fresh, colourful salad. Mains include the usual flurry of bhoonas, chasnis and kormas, but, as part of a simple curry and rice selection, you get steaming bowls of straight-up campfire-side style food. There's also a 'desi-style traditional' section, which consists of chicken or lamb on the bone in rich, thick sauces - wonderfully messy, indulgent eats that should come served with a toothpick. Jak would choose one of these and he would certainly be proud.
