It's hard to believe, but in 2006 Marcello Sprio, his friend Antonio and both their families, went for a lifestyle change by moving from Milan to Edinburgh. They left behind 'four million cars and mosquitoes', and we are the beneficiaries for they brought with them a little slice of Italian sunshine in the form of Deli and Latteria Sprio & Co. This bright and cheerful café may only have enough seats for ten, but it serves some of the best coffee in Stockbridge. Ingredients are either imported from Italy or from specialist local suppliers such as Au Gourmand, which provides the delicious chewy bread. A simple panino of salame piccante, olive paste and salad is wonderfully peppery, while an aromatic bruschetta brushed in the best olive oil and sprinkled with crunchy sea salt leaves you licking your lips with delight. Alternative choices include pasta and bean soup or polenta mixed through with gorgonzola and peppers. Do leave room for velvety hot chocolate or light yet succulent pear and almond tart. Whatever you choose, you can guarantee the highest quality food, put together with real care and enthusiasm. It isn't too slick, so relax, enjoy the Italian radio and let the flavours linger.
