Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Celadon’s façade may well be unassuming to the point of anonymity, but to walk on by is to miss a treat. Inside is a gloriously unfussy and welcoming restaurant that manages to combine simplicity and style without ever making a big deal of it. Sit on a dark wooden chair or in a (surprisingly deep) cushioned bench along the wall, and consult the menu. Be warned, this may take some time – the selection is large, and you are about to discover a number of new dishes that will quickly become firm favourites. A starter of weeping tiger (char-grilled steak with mint, lime coriander and chilli) is a surprisingly delicate combination of smoke, salt and fire, and is served on a bed of salad redolent of Thai herbs and fish sauce. That's hard to top, but black pepper duck comes close, arriving in a sizzling platter, its richness offset by the tart sauce and charcoal spice of the pepper. If you can manage it, try the mango and sweet coconut rice for dessert – a sweet, sharp, salty treat, and a perfect finish.

  • High point: High quality, low fuss
  • Low point: Where is it again?

good food but not the best I have sampled in Edinburgh. I felt that the tom yum soup was not spicy enough so a more international flavour perhaps. However service was friendly and quick enough as did not want to be rushed. Overall happy with the experience and I have returned for more hence the good rating.

A well turned out local establishement with friendly staff which appears to attract an eclectic mix of clientele you would expect of a restaurant in this part of town. The menu is good with a wide selection of options and the wine list was broad enough and not overpriced.

Starters were hot, fresh and tasty and the Tom Yum soup was equally delicious with perfectly cooked fresh prawns.

Celadon let themselves down with slow service and main courses which were barely warm. Despite this it was at least tasty. Perhaps on a less busy night they would have made more of an impact.

Fantastic food and friendly service in this great local Thai in the Southside. A well kept secret yet only 1 mile from Royal Mile.

One of the most under-rated Thai restaurants in Edinburgh. Wonderfully fresh food and beautifully presented. Would definitely recommend the tom yum soup, lamb shank in an amazingly fragrant sauce, and the coconut ice-cream. Delicious!

Took my mum here when she was up visiting and she made us all go back there two days later!

Great food, incredibly attentive waiting staff and a lovely interior. Just a shame its a bit off the beaten track so more folk can appreciate it.
