Of all boulevards in all the cities, Nelson Street in Glasgow's post-industrial Tradeston district may not come to mind for destination dining options. The avenue's four lanes are commonly packed with west-bound motors and buses heading for an M8 slip road. But here, across from the classic Village Curry House, this stylish newcomer - with a clean and uncluttered modern décor - opened in 2006. In accordance with recent trends, it highlights a halal grill menu. Overall, the à la carte selection is reasonably concise, with 16 starters and about twice as many main courses. The latter range from 'stone sizzled butterfly lamb chops' to more familiar saag gosht (chicken or lamb with spinach). Tawa's pot-roasted chicken is supposed to deliver a whole baby bird in a clay container, but the one that appears is rather grown-up. It's no less tender for its age, saffrony and not drowning in sauce. The prawn malai masala is creamy with plentiful (if small) shrimp. In addition to the ground-level dining space, where one might feel a tad exposed to the street, given the 2.5 metre-high glazing, there is also mezzanine seating. However incongruous the surrounding area seems today, it is destined for residential redevelopment: Tawa might find itself sitting pretty.
