Conceived as a more upmarket venture by the owners of the popular Italian restaurant chain DiMaggio's, Amarone immediately impresses with an elegant entrance and staircase leading to a stylish, modern basement dining room. High stained glass windows frame passing shoppers' feet near the ceiling, and if the arty monochrome photography is low-key the giant print of Italy's 2006 World Cup triumph is endearingly less so. A platter of crostini misti is a substantial starter, with three tranches of ciabatta heaped individually with earthy wild mushrooms, peppers roasted to a lightly charred softness and moist mozzarella and tomato. The ortolano Amarone resembles stromboli, but is a compelling variation on calzone, a rolled pizza dough baton draped with thick slices of speck ham and filled, somewhat unevenly, with mild Fontina cheese, button mushrooms and cherry tomatoes squishing in their skins. Satisfaction in a delicately sweet loin of lamb, cooked seductively pink and tender, is tempered somewhat a strong thyme, rosemary and mustard crust, while a pasta shell dish of sautéed vegetables, tiger prawns, cod and pancetta is a rich, vibrant union of surf and turf.
- High point: Diverse selection of focaccia
- Low point: Uninspiring abstract art
