This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Another popular eatery from the ever-expanding Di Maggios chain – the interior and menu give a more slick and grown-up feel to this restaurant compared to their other outfits that populate the city, and with price tags to match. Descending from the entrance, the basement restaurant – with alcove seating, private booths and split level dining – feels intimate and refined. Dimmed lighting comes from small spotlights and large circular lampshades glowing deep purple. Start with tomato and mozzarella salad – the milky cheese tastes fresh and authentic while the tomatoes add a sweet juicy finish to the pungent aniseed flavour of basil. Meats, fish, pizza, pasta and salads make up a mind-boggling 50 main courses – rigatoni con salsiccia comes with well-cooked pasta, though the sauce of crumbled Italian sausage with ricotta is lacking the expected depth of flavour and texture. A handful of generic desserts are available but their coffee is of a good standard – served with a little chocolate on the side, it’s hard to go wrong.
- High point: Central location, sophisticated décor
- Low point: Bland pasta sauce
Reviews of Amarone (2 Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow)

AmaroneReport -
Dissappointing. Founded complaint by several tables ignored regarding poor hygiene, disturbing odours,. almost damp like presence when dining.
No matter how good food was going to be the surrounding odours wera always going to overpower, the same could be said of the lack of concern/reaction from the waiting staff and indeed the management team.
Overpriced pasta with poor service = no return to this establishment, even after many years of loyalty I am afraid

Perhaps the best Italian in Glasgow. The restaurant is beautiful, the service attentive and the food is wonderful. The fritto misto is a lovely dish which I find myself re-ordering frequently. Also enjoyed the meatballs with tomato sugo, as well as the pizzas, calzone and panacotta for desert. The gamberoni diavola starter is exquisite. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough, the standard of cooking is excellent.
