The Merchant Square might be as close as one can come to dining ‘al fresco’ in Glasgow, without being rained upon or bothered by passing locals. Diners can relax over a glass of wine at candlelit tables on the cobbled square. With the red-chequered tablecloths, professional waiting staff and light chatter from coming from the square, diners may be forgiven for thinking that they’re on the continent, instead of on Candleriggs. The menu bares the fruit of a typical Italian – pasta, pizza, veal, chicken and fish – but what the chef lacks in imagination he makes up for in skill. A generous starter of butterflied king prawns come bound in a deliciously sweet and chunky red pepper sauce, with rich flavours of garlic and chilli bursting through, served upon a sauce-soaked garlic crostini. A dish of mussels and king prawns tossed amongst fat strands of tagliatelle is bound in a rich, creamy sauce with sweet shallots and black pepper - a different take on the usual pomodoro sauce, but a satisfying one that works. And for dessert, a simple flavour of a traditional homemade cheesecake is livened up with a sweet, tangy forest fruit compote and lengthened with a hint of cinnamon.
- High point: Outdoor-indoors dining
- Low point: Menu could go further with a splash more imagination

Lombardi's Ristorante GrillReport -
Very poor experience and fell well short of the standard I have previous experienced in similarly priced restaurants.
We went on a Sunday evening for the pre theatre, 2 courses for £10 offer displayed outside of the restaurant. The starters where fine, however both main courses left a lot to be desired. My girlfriend went for the sea bass in white wine sauce which was very bland, couldn't even taste the wine in the sauce. It came out with a wee bowl of boiled veg at the side. When mine came out, pork medialions in a tomato sauce, we realised this was between us. The pork was very thinly sliced and there wasn't much of it at all.
I complained. This was met with a fairly hostile response and the comment "no one else has complained" and the offer to leave my comments on a tiny piece of paper along with my email address. "the manager will get right in touch with you". Reassured off we went, quite annoyed.
We went into O'Neill's opposite for a drink. I'm not a huge eater, but my main at the restaurant was so meagre I ordered food. Grilled Irish Sausages & Colcannon £2.95. And in comparison to the awful "meal" I just had it was stunning.
One month later I still haven't heard from Lombardi's. So I though I'd tell everyone.
One to avoid.

Lombardi's Ristorante GrillReport -
After reading the above, I wanted to give a more balanced review. I've eaten there a few times & each time, the staff have been friendly and attentive. I've taken advantage of their half price pizza or pasta lunch time deal recently - one time, the spaghetti bolognese, the second time, the chicken pasta dish. Both were tasty & portions were actually so large, I couldn't finish them (and that's not like me usually). Price for the pasta worked out £4 (half price) + with coffee & oj added on, the bill came to £8.
I didn't expect it to be a high-end restaurant - I wanted something simple, cheap and cheerful & I wasn't disappointed. Go and find out for yourself what you think before judging from these reviews.
If you want a fantastic Italian, I highly recommend Battlefield Rest in Mount Florida, South Side.

I have just returned from lunch here at around 1.30 on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday, 24 March.
In all respects, this was truly the most appalling meal that I have ever had the misfortune to have had.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a surly-faced Italian waiter, who supplied us with the a la carte evening menu, and would only supply the lunch menu upon request, and the without an apology. In ordinary circumstances, a surly-faced Italian waiter is often part of the charm, however this one clearly couldn’t be bothered to be there. Our drink orders were taken, but there was delay of some 10 minutes before these arrived. After around 15 minutes, our orders were taken - Tuna and Bean Salad for me then Lasagne, and Mushrooms followed with Meatballs for my partner. We also ordered 1 portion of fries, as well as garlic bread.
After some 20 minutes, our starters arrived. My Tuna was of the standard that I could have rustled up in about 25 seconds with an onion and a tin each of tuna and cannellini beans. However, instead of being mixed together, the tuna had the consistency one might expect of tuna in a pre-packed shop sandwich, after being mashed together. The same fate appears to have met the beans. Having asked for no rocket in my salad, I was somewhat surprised to find that the garnish consisted of nothing but rocket and a single cherry tomato. I asked the waiter for some oil and vinegar, and was supplied with olive oil and the same clear vinegar one might expect to be liberally shaken over chips in a chip shop. My partner reported that the mushrooms were particularly delicious however.
Around 35 minutes later our main course arrived. My lasagne came with no accompaniments other than a paper napkin under the luke-warm serving dish. Lucky, I commented to my partner that we had ordered fries and garlic bread. However, despite our waiter having confirmed our fries and garlic order after taking our original order no such side dishes appeared. In terms of the standard of the food it was on a par with a frozen ready meal. I had noted from a neighbouring table that their meatball dish contained around 6 meatballs. However, my partners dish had only 3, along with a toasted roll, and was just as luke-warm as my lasagne. Needless to say, we ate our main meals as quickly as we could (which didn’t take long on account of the very small portions, even for lunch), and asked for the bill. Surprisingly, the bill was brought to us very swiftly. However, we ended up having to scrabble around in our pockets to find the £25.30 in cash as we were fed up waiting on the waiter with the chip and pin device. Luckily we were not charged for the no-show fries and garlic bread, but I did note that we had been charged an extra pound for my glass
