This restaurant has a modern feel that is highly suitable for its trendy Merchant City location. The leather chairs are contemporary but comfortable, and an eclectic collection of smooth boulders are scattered about the space. A stylish, roughly hewn wooden banister leads to an elegant mezzanine, which makes a superb private dining space. The only real visual giveaway that you are in an Italian restaurant comes from a large, slightly kitsch mural of the Rialto Bridge that dominates the space. Loosely part of a family-run set of restaurants in and around Glasgow, Qua has a team of staff who are chirpy and authentically Italian. Large portions of no-nonsense Italian food are exemplified by the antipasti – a Desperate Dan portion of salami, Parma ham, mortadella, mixed tomatoes and olives, served with a small salad. Main courses include risotto pollo Milanese, a traditional rice dish made with sticky arborio rice, which absorbs the flavours of the chicken, saffron, mixed herbs and cream. Side dishes can prove slightly disappointing and occasionally tiramisu can be off the dessert menu. This is a capital offence in Italian restaurant land, but is partially redeemed by a good selection of gelati.
