Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Situated in the fashionable Merchant City area, Qua likes to think of itself as a stylish place to eat quality Italian food, the way they do back home. The décor is minimalist, with red and black furniture dominating the large dining area which is spread over two floors, the only artwork on show is the large mural of the Rialto Bridge in Venice. The vast menu covers all bases from pizzas, pastas, and salads to fish, meat and blackboard specials. Try the ricotta and spinach tortellini to start – the superior ingredients used lift the appetizer above the norm, while an accomplished tomato sauce – so often bland in other restaurants – brings the dish together. From the meat section, the old retro classic tournedos rossini impresses with superior buttery beef fillet, though the generic sauce is lacking and rather acidic. Justifiably popular are their hand-stretched pizzas – available with a multitude of different toppings.

  • High point: High-quality ingredients
  • Low point: Huge menu compromises freshness

I visited Qua last night with a party of 11, I had been there many times, found food lovely and service good. Last night I found the food to be good but the service was awful to the point that they were rude. They rushed us through our whole meal, in fact taking away one of the desserts when we werent finished. We had booked table at 6 pm and then at 7.50 they came to us with the bill and told us they needed the table. When booking the table they did not inform us that the table needed to be vacated by a certain time. Would certainly need to think twice before I go back.

I was very disappointed with my visit to Qua. I have been to this restaurant with my boyfriend on several occasions and always enjoyed it. On this occasion we took friends from abroad with us and I have to admit we were embarrassed at having exposed them to this place.

The whole experience was terrible from start to finish. The waiting staff were rude and when serving our starters, mumbled what they were and were angry at us when we didn't understand them. My boyfriend's salad was brown and definitely not fresh. The main courses were also disappointing. We ordered penne pasta and in the menu it was described as being in a creamy tomato sauce. It was however dry, inedible and bland. He is not a fussy eater at all, but even he could not eat this. It was more like stew than pasta. The pasta was so overcooked it was mushy.

We were then served the wrong desserts and when we told the waiter this he just took away the desserts with no word of an apology and we didn't even know if he was going to bring any back. After our meal we did not want coffee, this seemed to annoy them and they just gave us the bill. This really angers me as we were just finished our meals and still had full drinks and were wanting to sit and chat. The restaurant was empty and they clearly did not need the seats and I feel that bringing the bill without us asking for it really put an end to the meal. This was a way of us saying goodbye to our friends from abroad and this meal abruptly brought their trip to an end.

When we paid for our meal they brought back the wrong change. It was £1 short, I know this is only £1 but at this point it was the principle of the matter and we were so annoyed at the way we had been treated. We told the waiter it was a pound short and he had to count it three times, go away and come back to count it again before he believed us. He then shouted across the restaurant to another waiter that we were asking for a pound, who proceeded to snigger in our faces about a pound!

The food is cheap but it is reflected in the quality and there are much better places around Glasgow with better food for the same price where you are treated with respect by the staff. The service is awful. We were in and out of the restaurant in less than an hour, clearly this food cannot be fresh or made to order. You have been warned this place has went downhill, DO NOT GO UNLESS YOU WANT RUBBISH FOOD AND TO BE RIDICULED BY THE STAFF.

Manager rude, food bland (meatballs not cooked), unprofessional service .......much better Italian food elsewhere in town!

lovely restaurant and attentive service but not particularly impressed. mozarella sticks were no better than those from a take away - did not taste like fresh decent ingredients were used. veal milanese was mediocre - veal was well cooked but the batter was soggy and the penne and tomato sauce fairly standard - expected slightly higher calibre for a restaurant. tiramisu was lovely however.

service charge of 10% was added at end of the meal. was happy to pay for this however surely it is common courtesy to state this on the menu or to inform your customers in some way, rather than sneaking it onto the bill? we were also charged for an extra bottle of wine - very sloppy.

there are much better italians in glasgow, namely the italian kitchen next door and amarone. go there.

I have been here a few times now for the excellent value pre-theatre menu. I had a totally different experience to the above and have never had better service as they were extremely efficient. 3 courses for £9.95 was great and our group of 6 all had a great meal!

Awful service booked through a website and because I was 10 mins late questioned by slobby manager. Went through with the booking anyway although service continued to be terrible and food was bland - dessert was ice cream with strawberries? Better Italian restaurants stones throw away. No wonder they are doing a 241 offer now but do not be tempted by it being cheap - there is a reason.
