In prime position on George Street, Tempus, which enjoyed a glamorous refurbishment in 2006, is the bar and restaurant of the George Hotel. Immerse yourself in lavish surroundings of leather banquettes, opulent jewelled mirrors and sparkling chandeliers. Choose between the more casual lounge area or the larger ballroom that houses the restaurant and is available for private hire. Opt for quick dishes such as sandwiches, mini foods (such as burgers and hot dogs) or a three-course meal. In a menu that strives to include local produce, start with delicious Loch Fyne smoked salmon on potato billinis with crème fraiche and caviar, or creamy wild mushroom risotto. Lightly beer-battered cod melts in the mouth, as does 20-day-aged Buccleuch rib-eye steak with béarnaise sauce, both of which are served with thick, chunky chips. Even simple sides such as French beans and shallots do not disappoint. Tempus' finale includes a fantastic pear and caramel bread and butter pudding and its signature chocolate tart served with pistachio ice-cream. The restaurant is soon to introduce a new and more extensive menu that will continue with the theme of good quality Scottish-European cuisine.
