Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Opened in June 2006, this lavish style bar, restaurant, nightclub and hotel set tongues wagging from day one. Luckily, it lives up to the hype, and has already bagged itself an armful of awards. Cherry-picked design flourishes make it stand out in the crowded George Street scene - and gaudy, swirling pink carpets and thick flock wallpapers look fresh and decadent next to beaded metal curtains and pretty chandeliers. The restaurant is crammed most evenings with eye-candy barflies and smart suits who come for the epic cocktail list and Asian-inspired food. They do a wide range of options at all hours, with breakfasts served from 8am. For lunch, there's coconut noodle soup, sushi, sandwiches, filling mains such as risotto or pasta, or an afternoon Bento tea of duck pancakes, sesame toast, ginger cake and cocktails. For dinner, there's doorstep-sized veal sirloin with sweet potato purée, or deliciously salty, gooey piles of gnocchi with four cheese and roasted tomato. Desserts such as strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake are served up like little works of art. Occasional glitches in food quality have been known to crop up, and busy nights can suffer from slow service, but overall this is a confident, unique venue for a colourful night out.
