Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

The Glass Pavilion in Broughty Ferry is where architecture meets food meets nature through a pane of glass and a stunning view of the Silvery Tay. The high, sweeping, all-glass frontage of the restaurant provides a panoramic outlook that extends far out to sea and across to Fife. The contemporary styling is matched by an art deco interior that is reminiscent of a luxury ocean liner, and even the waiting staff have blue waistcoats and matching shirts. Every inch of space is utilised to create a bustling café run from a gin-palace bar. The fact that each table is able to enjoy the view is testimony to the architects who transformed this former bathing shelter into a contemporary eatery serving everything from standard tearoom fare to à la carte evening meals. Soup and sandwiches seem to be the favoured lunchtime choice, although there are main courses available. Confusing menus don't lay the best of foundations, and slow service can't fully be justified as giving you time to appreciate the view. However, the evening menu steps up a gear in both care and execution, with dishes such as poached fillet of halibut accompanied by an oyster and vegetable nage and fillet of Angus beef served with wild mushroom gratin typical of what's available.

  • High point: Inspiring architecture and fantastic views
  • Low point: Pedestrian pace

Reviews of The Glass Pavilion (The Esplanade, Broughty Ferry, Dundee)

Superb. Couldn't fault it in the least.
Our waitress (Scarlet) fantastic. She looked after us like we were the only customers in, even although the place was packed.
We had 2 starters, 4 main courses and a sweet, all served and eaten in 1.5hrs.
I've read the comments above and I'm assuming the management has looked at them and taken note.
Can't wait to go back!!!!!!!!!!!
Ps Kids play area a godsend.

Shockingly bad! Really, don't waste your time or money eating here: the food is simply appalling. I seriously wondered if the cook had any training or experience at all. He/she can't cook anything properly: not pasta, not rice, certainly not fish or meat. I can't express how bad it was. The worst food I've ever been presented with in a restaurant. It looked dismal and tasted even worse. We both returned our main courses. The only thing that rates a star is the view and location. You might chance coffee and a cake here; a meal would be a big mistake.

Dont bother!!

Great location views of tay and archictecture are great but that is where it ends.

There is little correlation with what is on the menu and what is eventually delivered to your table

for example Cullen Skink (soup) is mash potato with fish in it.

The chef does not know what seared means as neither scalops nor tuna steak showed any signs of having been exposed to intense heat.

If I were to guess broiled would be a more accurate description of the cooking process.

sauces seem limited to warm cream with herbs in.

Wild rice is long grain dyed yellow and has no flavour at all

Overall the most disappointing meal I have ever had to pay for

As the title says - I went to The Glass Pavillion on a Monday evening in mid February with my partner. Prior to arrival I checked out the website and everything looked well; good location, new Art-Deco designed building and a tasty looking menu with plenty of fish dishes. Upon entering we were eventually seated after searching around for a member of staff.

My parter ordered a glass of house red, duly a glass of house white turned up. This rectified (house red was good) we ordered a starter of King Prawns in Chilli - this dish tuned up with fairly good prawns albeit drenched in Thai sweet chilli dipping sauce (Straight out of the bottle!)

For the mains I order The Fish Pie which consisted of a bowl with thick potato with a few bits of white fish and a thick layer of Red Leicester cheese on top. No white sauce, no prawns, bland, a pathetic dish which was overpriced even if it had been half decent.

I wont even go on about my partners dish as I think Ive said enough.
