This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Tourists, locals and workers alike congregate in this bright, modern space with its beautiful wooden furniture, which sits in stark but appealing contrast to the adjoining 16th-century John Knox house. Run by the same catering company that operates the café at the Fruitmarket Gallery down the road, the Storytelling Café is all about freshly prepared food made with care. Breakfast might be a chunky sausage bap or bowl of warming apple-cinnamon porridge with cream, while lunch options walk the tried and trusted soup/sandwich/salad line. A couple of hot specials are offered daily, the likes of salmon fishcakes with chunky tartare sauce providing welcome sustenance before listening to stories or continuing on a sightseeing mission. Young children are especially welcome, with regular storytelling events, a large open space to run around in and a wholesome range of lunch options especially for the smallest people. All in all, this little gem provides welcome respite from the tartan-themed cafés and international coffee chains that dominate the Royal Mile.
- High point: Relaxing with a coffee and cake, exploring some new stories
- Low point: When it's busy, it's noisy
