Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Right in the heart of Portobello High Street, just a stone's throw from the beach, lies Kitcheners, a little deli-cum-café with big intent. The double shop front caters to all comers, and tins of chick-peas and jars of organic chutney can be bought, baked potatoes and soup can be taken away, and those with more time to spare can while away a pleasant hour or two sampling all of the deli's delights while gazing out at people passing by. Owners Kath Morrall and Chris Burton place a heavy emphasis on organic, locally sourced and fair trade products, and are proud to be part of a burgeoning independent local food scene. Choose from a wide selection of Ian Mellis cheeses, served with a zingy tomato chutney and home-made oatcakes. The hot roast beef sandwich arrives in a slightly lacklustre roll but is paired with crisps and salad and is well matched by some powerful wholegrain mustard. The pavement outside Kitcheners captures the sun in the morning, and, with this array of foodie treats on offer, what better way to pass the time than by sitting outside in the summertime, watching the world go by.
