Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Although it's no longer affiliated to the chain of the same name, Glasgow's original Kebabish on the Southside has the same spotless, contemporary interiors with the signature open kitchen and a bit of theatre, thanks to flames leaping from the charcoal grills. Afternoons attract groups of school children coming in for lassis, fresh fruit juices and home-made sweets, while families are happy to bring their mums and grandmas for dinner. It's what Queen's Park/Pollokshaws has long needed: a quality south Asian café/bistro that caters for the community (a no-alcohol policy encourages the Muslim trade), while a wider clientele is attracted by the 'thrill of the grill', bargain prices and no old school sauces or food colouring. Pakoras are made fresh to order, dhals are buttery and fragrant and the sizzling grill options come in mountainous portions of lean lamb or fish, as well as succulent whole baby chickens with chilli sauce. Curries are equally good. Bhindi ghosht with cubed lamb and pan-fried okra is deep, rich and finished with fresh coriander. A franchise operation in the Kebabish Original chain operates on Gibson Street in the West End.

Just as well that the Southside Kebabish is no longer affiliated with the Gibson Street establishment. The former surpasses the latter in every sense. Head for the deep South!
