Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

This bright ‘fast food’ venue is a clear hit with the local Asian community. Families and large groups can dine on affordable helpings in the comfort of the main restaurant or separate function area, or utilise the outside catering service – new for 2011. The menu features homely ‘desi’ style dishes and includes pakora, samosa, daal soup, chilli, and garlic prawn starters. Mains feature grill specials, kebabs, chef’s specials, tikka massala, rogan josh and achari, as well as ‘old school’ jalfrezi, dopiaza and bhuna dishes – all with the option of chicken, lamb, vegetable or prawn. Diners can watch the chefs in the open kitchen cook a range of kebabs, chops and chicken on the flaming grill – theatrical and entertaining, yet the moist fish of the spiced whole machi grill loses appeal with its deep-fried coating. From a good vegetarian selection, the tasty massala sauce of the mutter paneer lifts the whole dish. Fresh exotic fruit juices and lassi are welcome healthy options among all the fried food. To finish, try the home-made galub jaman – perfectly sweet donut-like balls.

  • High point: Good veggie options
  • Low point: Dishes can be heavy on the oil

Visited here on Friday 26 Feb 10 at about half five in the evening. Inside it's a very modern design and nice and bright. However, nobody seemed too interested in seeing us to a table, the nearest waitress was on the phone, she waved to a nearby waiter who showed us to a table next to the only other diners, who were a family with young loud children. We politely asked to be moved to a quieter table which was fine.
The waiter then plonked the menus on the table and walked off without asking if we would like a drink and we never saw a member of staff again for a full 5 minutes. Remember there were only two sets of diners in at this point so they were hardly rushed off their feet.
We placed our order, starters of chilli prawns and garlic prawns and managed to get our drinks. My fresh orange and lemonade was excellent, they seemed to have used freshly squeezed orange in the drink, wonderfully refereshing. The starters arrived and it was good sized potions of tiny prawns smothered in sauce with plenty of salad. Both dishes were ok, but nothing more.
Our mains were chicken chilli masala and lamb biryani accompanied with a sweet nann. Ordered another fresh orange and lemonade from the disinterested waiter, who returned with a glass of fresh orange...doh!
Eventually got another waiter to correct it. The mains were ok. The chilli chiken masala sporting a lovely sauce, however the biryiani was very average, leaving an unwelcome after taste on my partners tounge. The sweet nann though was lovely, obvioulsy fresh and covered in nuts with what seemed like honey inside.
We noticed other diners coming in and being left for some time without drinks orders being taken and at one point one of the waiters decided to do a bit of hoovering while we were at our main courses.
Overall a very very average experience with some poor service and the food being hit and miss. Will we go back? NO.

I was in for a late lunch yesterday and the food and service was spot on we had mixed grill and jumbo chilli prawns which were delicous thank you so much, please consider opening again in the west end as it is a bit of a journey for dinner. I often visited the west end grill but sadly had a few unfortunate comments from the staff there as my friend did to. Our waiter yesterday was fab so may I take this opportunity to thank you again for an unforgatable meal

Best regards irene Mcgoldrick

Just as well that the Southside Kebabish is no longer affiliated with the Gibson Street establishment. The former surpasses the latter in every sense. Head for the deep South!
