Essentially just a takeaway with a few stools set against a bar along one wall, this long-standing takeaway serves up a range of pakora, curries and grills, as well as standard burgers and pizzas and other crowd-pleasers like kebabs (forget doners and get a naan-wrapped king chicken tikka kebab). The real distinction here is in the Indian dishes, which are as good as many of the city’s curryhouses – better in numerous cases. Starters include a selection of pakoras – beyond the same-old chicken and mixed are brie & spinach, mozzarella & cashew and cauliflower & cheese – various samosas, tandooris and puris, which are delivered still light and airy with a deliciously fresh and vibrant aloo chana topping coming separately. Thirty-odd main curries include butter masalas, saags, kormas and biryanis. South Indian garlic chilli chicken is hot, fruity and packed with fresh pepper and green chilli. A rich, subtle cumin-spiced Ceylonese korma is boosted by generous amounts of cream and a tang of cloves. Prices are exceptional for some of the quality on offer. Staff are friendly and eager to please – while the owner has amazing powers of recollection when it comes to customers and their orders. In the UK’s curry capital,Indian takeaways don’t get any better than this.

We ordered two vegetarian curries from Balti Club on a Saturday evening just before 7pm, with cinema tickets already pre-booked for 8.50. At 8.40, after four phone calls from the takeaway (the staff had taken our credit card details down wrongly, then asked for directions, then rang twice over a period of 25 minutes claiming to be outside our building even though they patently weren't), our food finally arrived. It was only after tucking in for a few minutes that I realised there was chicken in my mushroom curry. I am a lifelong vegetarian, so as well as feeling rather unwell, my expensive dinner went straight in the bin, and by this point, our expensive cinema tickets were also wasted. All in all, Balti Club completely ruined an entire evening. Avoid at all costs.

We got a menu through the door and decided to try - but I looked up on here first. This is, by far, the best cuury I've eaten - from New York to London to Glasgow. The man on the phone truly wanted our business, and took care to make sure it was right (novel concept) and it came piping hot and fresh. The Garlic Naan was handmade and melted in my mouth with hand-cut garlic and oils. And it was not greasy food and we did not feel sick/stuffed after eating it. Amazing what a little love will do to food!
