Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Detail is something Wilsons takes seriously, from the real chocolate sprinkled on your cappuccino to the side salad with peppery greens and tiny cherry tomatoes that burst with flavour. Long sidewalk windows hung with big bunches of dried chillies and garlic let the light in, giving the space a boulevard café ambience (yes, even in Giffnock!) which is underscored by happy, professional staff. The hot orders for lunch are executed with style and a lack of fuss, cheesy omelette arriving on the plate as a fluffy roll with a melting centre, while a heady Cullen skink is packed with smoked fish and leeks. It's a seasonal menu geared towards taste, rather than simply rehashing the old standards. Even the 'nibbles' section shows thought about what people really like to eat, embracing updated old favourites such as chips, or organic bread and butter, alongside red bell peppers stuffed with feta. Wine is also available - and recommended - by the glass and bottle. The delicatessen with which the café shares space trades in everything from freshly-made takeaway meals, off-licence wines, cheeses and meats, as well as a collection of exotic provisions and pickles - including the intriguing Isle of Bute turnips pickled in gin and tonic.
