'He was a wise man who invented beer.' So said Plato, according to the menu at this Bavarian-style bar/restaurant on the edge of Glasgow Green. It would seem the owner is no slouch either, having set up his own brewery on-site to produce house beers in accordance with German purity laws. The results are impressive. West Fest, for example, is a smooth lager with a distinctively fresh taste, served in porcelain mugs. Generally prompt table service and a German-influenced menu give this spacious corner of the old Templeton Carpet Factory a continental polish. A special of Sauerbraten (roast beef), which comes with red cabbage and potato dumplings in a red wine jus, is so tender it scarcely needs a knife to cut it. For dessert, hot apfelstrudel is a light filo pastry stuffed full of stewed diced apples and raisins with subtle hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. For smaller appetites there's an express lunch menu comprising soup, sandwiches and burgers (Monday-Friday 11am-3pm). In the summer months, a beer garden is set up out front so visitors can enjoy a view of the People's Palace and Doulton Fountain.
