Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops. This review is taken from the 2007 edition.

Food with an organic label must now be available in almost every Scottish supermarket, but that epithet brings no guarantee that the product has been locally produced. If you long for sustainable food that hasn't travelled hundreds of miles to your plate then Jamesfield Organic Centre, just outside Abernethy, is the perfect place to visit. The cavernous, modern farm shop and friendly restaurant here lie at the heart of the family farm that supplies them with organic meat, eggs and seasonal vegetables. Coffee and cakes are served all day, and, at lunchtime, hearty home-made dishes are available in the modern, glass-fronted restaurant, which affords diners an entertaining view of some lively free range chickens as well as the River Tay beyond. Generously-proportioned and freshly-prepared sandwiches, omelettes and burgers are all available, but it's worth perusing the specials board for the day's soups and unfussy meat dishes, such as a rich casserole of peppery beef sausages with plenty of floury boiled potatoes to soak up the glistening tomato sauce. The wine list is entirely organic, and, for summer 2007, a high tea will be served into the early evening.

  • High point: Being able to see where your food has come from as you eat it
  • Low point: On-farm location means it's the diners who have to travel to the food
