Pick your moment at Café Camino and you could find your coffee and sandwich accompanied by the solemn, yet uplifting, tones of a Catholic Mass being sung next door. This is the St Mary's Cathedral café and, since 2005, it has been doing excellent business feeding the congregation, shoppers and office workers from the surrounding area. It has a light and spacious seating area, with flowers on the tables and windows along one side allowing for people-watching as you digest. Good, solid fare includes meat or vegetarian sandwiches and wraps with Cumberland sausage and onion relish or mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto. Chicken, bacon and brie is freshly made on the griddle and accompanied by a crunchy salad garnish with balsamic dressing. Alternatively, there are baked potatoes or home-made soups such as sweet potato and butternut squash to sample. Tea, coffee and juices are all fair trade, and there is a wide range of patisseries and cakes for that afternoon lull. Food is served throughout the day and into the early evening. Lunchtimes can be particularly busy, as are Sundays, with breakfast a popular option for those hurrying to services.
- High point: Eating chocolate cake to the strains of Mass
- Low point: Frenetic just before services start
Café Camino, the café and Parish Centre for St Mary's Cathedral, is well established as a regular breakfast and lunch venue for shoppers, mums and buggies and office workers. The menu offers full Scottish breakfasts, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and wholesome home-made soups. Specials are often Polish treats – goulash, perogi or bigos – and the friendly staff bake traditional cakes as well. The café came top out of all the UK's cathedral cafés last year. Can get very busy at lunchtimes and around services. Fairtrade tea, coffee and juices and a good selection of wines and beers are on offer. Great sit-out terrace when the sun shines.

This is a really good cafe in the centre of town. Non-religious people (like me) shouldn't feel put off by the fact that it is a church cafe as it serves really good quality lunches at very reasonable prices. It is big and bright inside and I have never had trouble getting a table and it is a great place to have a quick lunch when you are doing some serious shopping! The (self) service is a wee bit slow sometimes but the staff are very polite and nice. I am sure that they do very well and hope that they raise funds for the cathedral which is very beautiful inside

They do sausages from Crombies - regular pork and a Sausage of the Week! Very excellent, if not for the waistline if enjoyed on too frequent a basis.

I visited several times while at the Sunday car boot sales at the Omni Centre & found it bright & cheerful. The menu looks good, prices are fine, tray bakes lovely & the grilled cumberland sausage in generous sized rolls hit the right spot! I look forward to going back for a meal at leisure.
