Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops. This review is taken from the 2007 edition.

Morningside Glory is the original venture in Edinburgh of the Glasgow-based G1 Group. Its clientele seem to be a mix of passers-by and locals popping in for a drink and a pew to watch the latest sporting fixtures. The furniture is a mix of leather sofas and comfy armchairs, alongside wooden tables and chairs, but choose carefully if you've come for a meal as some of the seating arrangements make it difficult to get on with the mechanics of eating. The menu of standard pub fare is served all day, every day, and any specials offered don't stray for from it. The mussel starter with white wine and garlic is good, and crustier bread would make it even better. The Aberdeen Angus burger is a safe bet, nicely cooked and with a generous helping of salad. But it is the Scotsman fish and chips that really stands out because of its quirky presentation in Morningside's favourite daily newspaper - plus tasty chips and a couple of pickled onions.

  • High point: Reasonably priced wine list
  • Low point: Dull desserts
