Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2011 edition.

Golden Dragon Castle boasts an excellent location on the corner of Rose and Castle Streets, so enjoy your view of the castle before you ascend the steps to this attractively decorated and kindly lit Cantonese-style restaurant. Tourists who can no longer bear to put one foot in front of the other are the main clientele and the high prices reflect the golden location. There is a good range of set meals from two to six persons and there are daily specials with a nod to Scotland such as sizzling venison. House special aromatic crispy duck is good to share with plenty of tender duck to be rolled up in warm pancakes after being stuffed with cucumber and spring onion batons and doused with plum sauce. Dishes could be a bit more flavoursome: the special of butterflied prawns in garlic will never keep a vampire at bay and neither will the spiced beef in garlic sauce. Fried beancurd is a delicate dish of soft tofu which contrasts with colourful crunchy peppers and carrots and the mango sorbet really tastes of mango.

  • High point: Central and comfortable
  • Low point: Some dishes could have a bit more oomph
