Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The cheerful green, white and red stripes of the Italian flag help this cosy family-run restaurant stand out among the hustle and bustle of busy Dalry Road. By day the friendly service, well-priced children's portions and good baby-changing facilities make it popular with families – and it often hosts children's parties – but by night the chic leather banquettes, stepped art deco-style cornicing and parquet flooring, not to mention romantic Italian crooners on the stereo, also make it ideal for those looking for slightly more grown-up dining that still has a homely touch. The menu offers a comforting selection of pasta and pizza, as well as traditional fish and meat dishes, but the specials board is where you find the most interesting options, such as fillet of salmon in a creamy, garlicky tomato and asparagus sauce or a wonderfully light cannelloni made with fresh pasta and filled with creamy ricotta and spinach. The dessert list concentrates mostly on the standard favourites such as tiramisu and ice-cream sundaes, but these are lovingly assembled and arrive at the table looking the part, with a good dollop of cream and perhaps just a little glitter.
