Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

The cheerful green, white and red stripes of the Italian flag help this cosy family-run restaurant stand out among the hustle and bustle of busy Dalry Road. By day the friendly service, well-priced children's portions and good baby-changing facilities make it popular with families – and it often hosts children's parties – but by night the chic leather banquettes, stepped art deco-style cornicing and parquet flooring, not to mention romantic Italian crooners on the stereo, also make it ideal for those looking for slightly more grown-up dining that still has a homely touch. The menu offers a comforting selection of pasta and pizza, as well as traditional fish and meat dishes, but the specials board is where you find the most interesting options, such as fillet of salmon in a creamy, garlicky tomato and asparagus sauce or a wonderfully light cannelloni made with fresh pasta and filled with creamy ricotta and spinach. The dessert list concentrates mostly on the standard favourites such as tiramisu and ice-cream sundaes, but these are lovingly assembled and arrive at the table looking the part, with a good dollop of cream and perhaps just a little glitter.

  • High point: Warm, friendly atmosphere and deliciously homely cooking
  • Low point: Nothing very imaginative on the menu

Last post wasn't supposed to show zero stars, I meant to mark it as 2 stars.

I stay fairly close to Tricolore and couldn't be bothered cooking tonight so went there with my girlfriend for a meal. Expectations weren't high, it wasn't a special event, I wasn't looking for anything great but still it managed to disappoint.

Starters were ok, I had Pate which was nice but the bread/toast that came with it was like cardboard which made it pretty hard to enjoy. My girlfriend had an Avocado and Prawn starter which was ok.

We both had steaks, I had the Sirloin and my gf had the Fillet, mine was lukewarm and didn't have much flavour. My gf was feeling a bit off colour by this point and didn't finish her steak, this came on quite quickly so I don't know if it was related to the food or not.

What really p** sed me off and compelled me to write a review (for the first time ever) was the wine.

I looked at the wine list, there were only half a dozen choices so I plumped for the only Chianti. The bottle arrived and the wine wasn't very nice. Just before we were getting ready to leave, I noticed on the back of the bottle, a satisfaction guaranteed promise. If you weren't happy, it directed you towards www.asda.com.

We hadn't finished the bottle so I had it corked, took it home and looked it up on www.asda.com. Tricolore has just charged me £21.95 for an Asda bottle of wine that I could buy for £3.78 just up the road at Chesser. I accept that wine has a huge mark up but that is ridiculous, I feel like I've been robbed, I'll never go back to this place again.

The Service at Tricolore was very good, the waitress was nice and friendly and attentive to our needs.

So to summarise,

Service = Excellent, Food = Alright, Nothing Special, Wine = Theft

I have to agree with Alfaman, I too have eaten in Il Tricolore a few times. and I have never been disappointed. I think the pizza's are the best I've had, not that sloppy middle mess you tend to get in other restaurants. The chef will cater for any reasonable request you have.

From start to finish it is always an enjoyable, relaxing experience. The staff are very attentative, but not intrusive. We are never rushed or made to feel like you only have an allocated time to eat your meal. It's a lovely dining experience. would I recommend Il Tricolore...........everytime!

I have eaten in this restaurant on many occasions and have never been disapointed, The last time being Valentines night. The main meal we ordered ( sea bass) was probably the best I have eaten. The starters and sweets we were served were also of a very high standard. The house white and red may not suit so called experts but we found them to be very acceptable. With mothers day coming up very soon I be paying Il Tricolore another visit. I would also like to say the staff are very curteous and are eagre to please.

1. Enjoyer of good food, II Tricolore – 23 July 2008, 12:33amIl TricoloreReport

I have used the List to choose restaurants in which my family have eaten out in Edinburgh since June 2006 and most restaurants have been excellent. II Tricolore provided a very poor meal. Two persons chose different chicken dishes and in both cases the chicken tasted very strongly of fish. The third person chose spaghetti bolognese and was hungry when he had finished eating. The best thing we ate was the mixed salad ordered as an extra.

We have eaten out in this area of Edinburgh regularly, noting that II
Tricolore was often empty when we walked past, however decided to give it a try as it was on the List. I now know that inclusion on the List is no guarantee of quality.
