Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

First impressions speak volumes and the smart, trendy interior of Voujon presents a haven away from busy Newington Road. Muted colours, fresh flowers, oak panels and a shadow ceiling make this an inviting place for Bengali and north Indian cuisine. A starter of murgh kebab arrives, beautifully presented on funky, square crockery. It’s wonderfully colourful, with huge chunks of distinctly flavoured chicken and crispy salad. Voll puri is lightly spiced lentil puree wrapped in a pancake, not heavy as you might expect and served with a fruity sauce. Ginger murghi is a bitingly hot concoction of chicken, crunchy strands of ginger and coriander with real kickback. A more gentle Kathmandu chicken includes lentils, onions, herbs and cinnamon. The menu encourages a departure from the familiar, although these are all available and ‘off menu’ choices are offered. Charming service and background Bollywood hits invite you to linger. Add a keenly priced wine list and it’s clear that owner, Salim Miah, is determined to make his restaurant a cut above the rest.

  • High point: Funky coffee cups
  • Low point: A visit involves a trek down Newington Road

Reviews of Voujon (107 Newington Road, Edinburgh)

1. Disappointing, Voujon, Newington road, Edinburgh – 20 August 2009, 5:24pm2 starsVoujonReport

If it's authentic, traditional Indian food you are looking for, this is not the place for you. My starter, not cheap at £7.95, consisted of a few overcooked prawns garnished with chunks of cucumber and shredded Iceberg lettuce. My husband's Rogan Josh lacked all of the punch associated with the dish and my Katmandu chicken was equally uninspiring. The chicken in both cases was grossly overcooked and the glutinous texture of both sauces was reminiscent of a supermarket packet sauce. Incongruously the food was served on designer Villeroy & Boch crockery - the only positive comment I can make of the whole dining experience.

Staff were equally uninspiring to the point of indifference. We can but hope that one fine day Kushi's will re-open. Edinburgh is a sadder place without that great institution and its professional, friendly service.
