Voujon translates as 'invitation to dine', and this small, stylish restaurant in the Newington area certainly entices you in. Sparkling white tablecloths with single long-stemmed white lilies and trendy white crockery are set off with simple, masculine painted walls and wood panels. The menu lives up to the décor and is a cut above the average, including a good mix of popular Indian and Bangladeshi classics as well as a few more unusual choices. Starters are freshly made and tasty and it is worth passing over the kebabs for a king prawn pathia with puri, which features prawns in a light creamy sauce wrapped in a beautiful puri pancake. Mains are also of a high standard with plenty of choice and a few unusual fresh fish options, including salmon from the nearby famous Eddie's fish market. The extensive vegetarian menu is packed with fresh local produce and won’t disappoint those looking for a bit of punch from their vegi curry. Meat eaters could try a biryani, which combines chicken, lamb or king prawn with juicy aubergine and other local veg. Voujon’s sensibly sized nan comes with bursting bubbles and just the right amount of ghee. King prawns in a subtle sauce enhanced by fresh coriander on a bed of puffed fried bread and accompanied by salad.
- High point: Stylish image stands out in the local area
- Low point: Perhaps because of the location, not the most vibrant atmosphere in town

If it's authentic, traditional Indian food you are looking for, this is not the place for you. My starter, not cheap at £7.95, consisted of a few overcooked prawns garnished with chunks of cucumber and shredded Iceberg lettuce. My husband's Rogan Josh lacked all of the punch associated with the dish and my Katmandu chicken was equally uninspiring. The chicken in both cases was grossly overcooked and the glutinous texture of both sauces was reminiscent of a supermarket packet sauce. Incongruously the food was served on designer Villeroy & Boch crockery - the only positive comment I can make of the whole dining experience.
Staff were equally uninspiring to the point of indifference. We can but hope that one fine day Kushi's will re-open. Edinburgh is a sadder place without that great institution and its professional, friendly service.
