This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
The 1901 Deli in Shawlands is a magnet for foodies, stocking as it does a huge range of wines that are hard to source outside a restaurant, along with plenty of organic snacks, biscotti and pasta. Costs can mount up buying your tea from the deli counter – it takes a lot of hummus, tiny Moroccan chicken wraps, dolmades and flatbreads, good though they are, to make a decent supper. But the lunch deals are superb. Fresh soups change daily and sandwiches are made to order from the seasonal selection of meats and cheeses – from Iain Mellis. Staff are happy to advise on combinations of flavours and textures. A recommended fiery chilli chorizo combined with sunblush tomatoes and lettuce makes for a very mouthwatering filling for the crusty wholemeal bread. Hampers and outside catering also available for special occasions.
