Edinburgh cafes can seem to come and go as swiftly as local football managers, but Jaspers Coffee & Juice Bar has quietly followed its own solid, unpretentious path for over five years now. Concentrating on the breakfast and lunch trade, this is clearly a well-rehearsed offering. Nothing fancy, but good, reliable grub. Breakfast is as traditional, big and wickedly calorific as you dare, even when going down the vegetarian route. Those of a more body-conscious bent (poor dears) can opt for the juice of the week, like tongue-twisting strawberrykiwipineappleorange. Melon, pear and ginger is a definite wake-up call with a strong bite. A Blueberry Bliss smoothie introduces breakfast oats into the mix of blueberries, orange, banana and yoghurt. There are at least ten juice and smoothie choices every day. At lunch, the dish of the day menu adds variety to the regular array of rolls, toasties, stovies, panini, baked potatoes and omelettes. Ham and cheese pancakes, curry pie and corned beef hash are just some of the hot options. Admirably, all the coffee, hot chocolate and sugar is organic and Fairtrade.
