Meals can become memorable for various reasons, and ambience or surroundings can at times be as important as the food. Clambering down the wooden gangplank that forms the entrance to the Renfrew Ferry is certainly not like the beginning of a normal dining out experience. From the upper deck, the waters of the Clyde and Glasgow's riverside skyline can be taken in, amid pine floors and clean tabletops. The colourful menu's emphasis is on good old-fashioned home cooking. Buffalo wings, pakora and bruschetta are among the offerings, while more substantial dishes - such as burgers, home-made lasagne and pizza - offer no surprises, but are lovingly described. Focaccia slices are a bit thin, but the fresh flavourings of olive oil, garlic and rosemary are very much apparent. Deep-fried haddock is firm and fresh with a light crisp batter, accompanied by a multitude of fries and tartar sauce. Desserts, which change daily, can include chocolate profiteroles and strawberries romanoff, arriving in pools of cream. Enjoy a coffee as the occasional speedboat zooms past, creating a pleasantly gentle bobbing sensation.
