Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

After climbing a flight of stairs next door to a row of tenements behind Kelvingrove Park, the plush, calm and intimate dining area of The Sisters comes as a very pleasant surprise. An understated hint of luxe whispers – but doesn’t scream - from the dining area –with soft, slate wallpaper, lots of thick curtains draped over the big windows, and two huge curtained-off private dining areas. Dishes are simple yet elegant and include a starter of smoked salmon with a crayfish salad - sweet chunks of apple bring out the smokiness of the salmon and the meatiness of the crayfish, all bound together with a herb mayonnaise. The sisters, Jaqueline and Pauline O’Donnell, like to ensure that "the best of Scotland’s larder" is brought to their two restaurants, including scallops from Ullapool and venison from Ardnamurchan. For mains, pink Gressingham duck breast melds together salty, sweet and meaty flavours - with crisp skin, meaty mushrooms and a sweet jus. The sisters’ experience can be tasted in the perfection of a heavenly, hot butterscotch sauce which is poured all over honeycomb ice-cream and scattered with puff candy meringue – truly delightful.

  • High point: Pleasant, plush and elegant – yet not over the top
  • Low point: Plastic menu holders don’t match the surroundings

I'd just like to second the comment above - I haven't yet been to the restaurant, but on calling them yesterday to request a listcard booking for lunch, they told me that the offer isn't available on weekends. When I mentioned that it was still up on the website the very helpful staff member I spoke to said that they would make an exception and allow me to book with the card. As it's now over 4 months since the previous poster commented on this issue, I'm surprised it hasn't been sorted out.

This comment is prior to my visit on Sat to The Sisters, Kelvingrove and is more aimed at the List card website. I called to make a List card booking for Sat and was told that they didn't take list card bookings at the weekend. On the website it says lunch Sat/Sun. As they have a decent lunch offer anyway, I said fine, but they should really speak to List Card about their entry online. This is not the first time this has happened to me and even after making comments to List Card about dates available being wrong in various restaurants, the dates are not updated. I am hoping to buy my second list card in October, as despite all the setbacks I have had, as a keen foodie, it is still a good deal. Could List card pls work on getting the details right though? thanks
