Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2011 edition.

Thai Orchid with its deep purple lighting, the gently orchestral music and large photographs of Thailand, provides a welcome escape from Argyle Street. The clientele are largely out-of-towners on expenses, possibly from the business hotels nearby. There are many recognisible features of a Thai restaurant here – complimentary crackers, satay meat skewers, pad Thai rice noodles, green curry and a laminated pudding menu of pre-made ice-cream desserts – so there is a slight feeling that the whole venture is a bit of a box-ticking exercise. It is worth mulling over the menu for a while as there is a huge range of less familiar options available. Fried prawns in lemon and chilli is one, as is cherrie duck – crispy duck slices in a very sweet, sweet and sour cherry liqueur sauce. The extremely 'sticky rice' comes in a small woven serving basket to be scooped out – in a lump – on to the plate, while the quantity of noodles can be a bit daunting. Delicate jasmine tea is a better finish than something from the laminated pud menu.

  • High point: Service and surroundings
  • Low point: Overly sweet sauce

2. was right! There's food was not bad,but the staff(also looked like the manager) argumentative attitude and manner was simply awful. I fully understand that the restaurant was busy but this however should never ever effect the service. Will never return and will warn friends/family of this place.

Please do not be put off by the previous review, I have never seen Ricky (the manager) be rude or aggressive to anyone including his staff and many of them have been there with him for years, so clearly he isnt some monster as made out. I have been going to this restaurant since he opened about 5 years ago and he has many regular customers.

The food is lovely and nothing is too much trouble for Ricky or his staff. He has a Thai Chef which many of these restaurants who claim to be Thai do not so you really do get proper Thai food, if not made more to local tastes to suit his customers.

Please give this place a chance and you will not be disappointed the prices are actually cheaper than other Thai restaurants in Glasgow, I have ate in them all I can assure you of that.

I strongly implore no one to go to this restaurant. The manager thinks he can disguise the disgusting way he talks to his staff by speaking in Chinese. Unlucky for him, i do. The food is overpriced for the portions you get and you need to keep the eyes on the back of your head in case the manager throws a knife at his staff and 'accidentally' smashes you in the back of the head.
