Owners Stefano and Sandro Giovanazzi set up Paperino's on Sauchiehall Street 15 years ago, and since 2005 have also had a popular West End branch to call their own. Pine booths, terracotta tiling and whitewashed walls provide a neutral backdrop for its wide clientele of diners. Despite having a name that translates as 'little duck', both branches are vast and portions are gargantuan. An antipasto plate from the selection of starters is large enough for a main course, and includes chunky bread, olives and thin slices of salami - but even this is dwarfed by a main of mussels in a garlic and tomato sauce. The house speciality - pappardelle alla paperino - is a more manageable serving, coating wide, thin strips of pasta with onions, bacon, chilli and tomato to satisfying effect. It may be hard to resist the intriguing deep-fried pizza dough sticks with a chocolate sauce dip for dessert, but it's even harder to finish them off. Service from the accommodating and stylishly-dressed staff is polite, if sporadic. The Byres Road branch has a separate takeaway (Paperino's To Go) next door, and also serves a breakfast menu until 11am, featuring panini and filled rolls.
